Getting to Know: Shanene Frederick

Shanene Frederick, an associate at Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney, LLP, is an accomplished litigator with experience in commercial, employment, administrative, and tort matters. Before joining HNRK in August 2022, Shanene completed a two-year clerkship at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, where she worked on a variety of civil and criminal matters. A bit more about Shanene follows.

As a women-owned boutique based exclusively in New York, HNRK is a unique place to work. What drew you to the firm?

Being familiar with gender disparities in the law, particularly with respect to the number of women partners at law firms and the number of law firms that are owned by women, my goal was to work at a firm with a demonstrable record of cultivating and supporting women attorneys. HNRK certainly embodies that spirit and has followed through on those efforts.

What is the most rewarding part of your job as an attorney?

As an attorney, there’s always a chance to learn about an area of the law you might be unfamiliar with and eventually gain the knowledge and ability to speak confidently on the subject. Practicing law is a constant process of learning, which I enjoy.

What was your biggest takeaway from clerking at the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin and how has it informed your career since?

My biggest takeaway from clerking was how to think critically about issues and effectively convey my thoughts to others. I worked for a great judge and had an amazing co-clerk, and by talking with them every day about issues, legal or otherwise, they helped me become a better lawyer.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?

I love to cook! I think it’s a great way to explore different cultures and learn what a particular dish means to a group of people.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

I’ve read every Toni Morrison novel.
